Description

Join the Cape Chamber Women's Network at our next Speaker Series Luncheon. Registration is required. Lunch is included. Our guest speaker will be The Honorable Abbie Crites-Leoni.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Abbie Crites-Leoni began her legal career in 1998 as an Assistant Prosecutor in Cape Girardeau County.  The following year, she took a position as the 32nd Judicial Circuit’s Juvenile Office Attorney.  In 2000, she was hired by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri.  As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she specialized in prosecuting cases involving drug trafficking, child exploitation, and government program fraud for more than a dozen years.

In February 2014, Judge Crites-Leoni was the first female federal judge appointed to work full-time in Cape Girardeau.  In addition to her regular duties, she presides over the Supervision to Aid Reentry (STAR) Court which is designed to assist individuals, who have completed a federal prison term and have a high risk of reoffending, in successfully reentering the community.  In 2020, she started the Federal Justice Fellowship, a four-week summer program, for upper level undergraduate students who are interested in the legal field.

Judge Crites-Leoni believes in the importance of community service.  She is a Past-President of the Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Board of Directors and the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau.  Abbie received her undergraduate degree at Southeast; she earned a double major in Theatre and Spanish.  In 2014, she was honored with the local Zonta Club’s Woman of Achievement Award.  Later, in 2019, she was received the University’s Distinguished Service Award.

Over the years, Judge Crites-Leoni and her husband, Dr. Edward L. Leoni, have operated and sold two small businesses:  The Water’s Edge—A Wedding & Event Retreat, and a custom-building company, Edward Abbie Builders.  They live in Jackson.  Their lives are enhanced by their three children and nine grandchildren.  They enjoy the outdoors, horses, and traveling.
